The Negative Effects of Extreme Emotions on a Person

 



What is an emotion?

Emotions are psychological states brought on by neurophysiological changes, variously associated with thoughts, feelings, behavioral responses, and a degree of pleasure or displeasure. People experience different emotions such as the basics known as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. It is normal for us to experience this, but when our emotions tend to go on a overboard, it may cause obstructive impact on a person. And this is what you call "extreme emotions".


What exactly is the meaning of having extreme emotions?



Extreme emotions or also known as emotional overwhelm is a state of being oppressed by intense emotion that is difficult to manage. It can affect ability of a person to think and act rationally. It could also prevent us from performing daily tasks. Emotional overwhelm may be caused by stress, traumatic life experiences, relationship issues, and much more. Being unable to control your emotion may have the cause from genetics, diet choices, or stress. It may be also from a health condition such as being depressed, anxious, or by the hormones. People can experience it any time.


Signs / Symptoms of Extreme Emotions

Symptoms of having extreme emotions can be physical, mental and behavioral.
  • feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or hopeless
  • feeling guilty without a clear cause
  • spending a lot of time worrying
  • having difficulty thinking or remembering
  • sleeping too much or too little
  • having changes in appetite
  • relying more heavily on mood-altering substances, such as alcohol
  • isolating from people or activities
  • experiencing unusual anger or irritability
  • experiencing fatigue
  • having difficulty keeping up with daily tasks
  • experiencing new, unexplained pain

Negative Impact through a Person

Negative emotions can cause chronic stress, which upsets the body's hormone balance, depletes the brain chemicals that is required for a person's happiness, and may damage the immune system. It can also affect a person's well-being and can cause other health problems such as having fatigue, depression, anxiety, and other health illnesses. 

How can we avoid it?

Here are some ways to avoid it:
  • Practice controlling emotions
  • Try to seek for a support: trusted adults, therapist
  • Focus on positive emotions
  • Practice meditation
  • Relax: try to do relaxing activities
  • Exercise
  • Don't hide what you feel

Expressing your emotions are normal and it is okay to show negative emotions as long as you can resolve it. Every feelings we express are valid. Being able to experience it can help us learn what to do in a situation in a right and healthy way. It can be difficult, but I know we can solve it. I trust you. 😊
